Now You're Speaking My Language: Active Translation Tools Are Changing the Game

n short order, everyone will be able to talk to anyone, in real-time, regardless of language barriers.  Remember the story of the Tower of Babel – well, it’s been solved, by technology. 

 

A recent shot across the bow was the release of Apple’s AirPods 3.  A live translation feature is available in these ear buds, which uses artificial intelligence to translate from 9 languages, in real-time.  Yes, that means that you can have your AirPods in, and listen to someone speaking another language, as if it were your own.  Not only that – but, if the person you are listening to is also wearing the new AirPods, what you are saying can be translated for them, too.  The implication of that is that, yes – you can speak to another person, in real-time, even where neither of you know the other’s language. 

Apple’s new AirPods may be the showiest option in this space – and, probably will become the most widely-used of these technologies – but, even before the new AirPods released, there have been live translation softwares and physical devices (even other ear buds) available.  Of course, none of those product lines have a customer base like Apple’s. 

 

So, it could be that this is what pushes live translation into general use. 

 

Of course, the business potential here is obvious, especially for certain practice areas, like immigration law.
